The People’s History of Leeds tells the story of the city through the voices of its citizens. Everyone has a story to tell and the older we get, the more stories we have. Leeds is full of inspiring and brilliant people and we want to celebrate their lives and their narratives. Through sharing the testimonies of ordinary and extraordinary people, we will tell an alternative history of the city, one which tells a different, more personal story. We are a team of older and younger writers who work together to search for stories and uncover what really happened. We interview people about intriguing historical events and present their words as precisely as possible. Our view of history is broad; our stories show off the unusual and significant but also the personal. We are interested in the jobs people had, the music they listened to, the causes they supported, the changes they made, the journeys they took – and loads more besides. Leeds people come from all over the world. Some are born in the city, some travel here from different counties and countries. Over the years, Leeds has welcomed people from everywhere. The stories we tell reflect this. Ultimately, all the stories we tall attempt to discover what is unique about this Northern city, and why people are proud to call Leeds their home. The People’s History of Leeds is a Leeds Older People’s Forum project, funded by Heritage Lottery. Our project partner is Leeds Museums and Galleries.

ROLL
WITH
IT
People have been skating in Leeds for over 120 years. Did you know that Leeds was home to a “skating craze” in the Edwardian era? Many Leeds people remember skating at the Silver Blades Ice Rink and later the Kirkstall Rollerena. We’d love hear your stories of skating in the 1960s. You might have been an experienced skater or just someone who loved to meet people. Your story might appear in our next chapter!
